We may live without poetry, music and art;
We may live without conscience and live without heart;
We may live without friends, we may live without books;
But civilized man cannot live without cooks.
After The Shake, They
Baked
Cooking In the Streets
San Francisco, 1906
We
know that readers of this publication will be astonished with the fortitude,
bravery, ingenuity and humor of the refugees/survivors after the 1906 San
Francisco earthquake and fire.
Women and men ventured into the streets to produce on makeshift stoves and ovens
hot meals for their families. All this was done with a much-needed sense of
humor, as you will note throughout this book.
A
copy of the original “1906 Refugees’ Cookbook” is included in this publication.
