Original Powell St. entrance to the Fairmont Hotel looms above Nob Hill as seen from California and Grant. The hotel, originally named “Fairmount,” was about to debut at the time of the earthquake.

The Powell Street entrance was covered by the Fairmont Tower constructed in the 1950s.

The current Mason Street entrance is really the rear of the hotel.

Survivors are hiking up the cable car trackway because the cobbles there were smoother.
